Why a Camera Inside Your CNC Machine Pays for Itself in 6 Months
A modern machining centre costs €150,000–1,200,000. An undetected broken tool running for 15 minutes = a scrapped part worth €2,000–40,000 and half a day of downtime. Incorrect tool offset = a batch of rejects discovered at final inspection. An in-process camera inside the CNC machine eliminates these problems.
The CNC machine vision market is niche but growing fast. Established system manufacturers (Renishaw, Marposs, Conoptica) sell solutions for €8,000–35,000. Our modules — adapted and integrated with existing controllers (Siemens SINUMERIK, Fanuc, Heidenhain, Mitsubishi) — cost €2,800–9,500 depending on integration scope.
We design, manufacture, and deliver modules to customers across Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and other Central and Eastern European countries.
Camera Applications in CNC Machines
1. Tool Breakage Detection Camera
A CMOS camera with LED or line-laser illumination photographs/films the tool after each machining cycle or every N cycles. An ML algorithm (running on an edge-AI module: NVIDIA Jetson Nano, Raspberry Pi CM4 or Hailo-8) compares the tool profile against a reference and generates an alarm on breakage or excessive wear.
- Established system manufacturers: Renishaw Vision (RVP), Marposs Vicivision, Conoptica OCQ, Zoller Genius 3
- Our custom modules: Allied Vision Alvium 1800 U-500 (5 Mpx, USB3 Vision) or Basler daA2500-14um (2.5 Mpx, GigE); stainless steel IP67/IP69K housing with sapphire window; coaxial 850nm LED or 50mW 660nm line laser illumination; Hailo-8 edge-AI module (26 TOPS)
- CNC integration: Alarm signal → digital input → M-code stops spindle or triggers tool change (e.g. SINUMERIK 840D: ASUB handled by NCK)
2. Spindle Camera
Miniature camera mounted on the spindle housing or inside the machining enclosure, observing the cutting operation from the side or above. Applications: vibration analysis recording (fixturing errors, spindle play), chip formation monitoring (cutting parameter optimisation), SCADA/MES integration for quality documentation (AS9100, IATF 16949).
Requirements: IP67/IP69K, coolant-resistant (Blasocut, Castrol Hysol, 5–8% emulsion), operating temperature up to +60°C. Camera: Sony IMX334 or IMX492 in M30/M42 stainless housing with LED air-purging (N₂ or compressed air positive pressure).
3. Boring Bar Camera
Specialist miniature camera mounted at the tip of a boring bar or adjacent to the boring head. Observes the bore from inside — real-time surface inspection without dismounting the part.
- Boring bar diameter: from 25mm (M8 OD camera)
- Integration length: 150–600mm
- Illumination: annular LED ring, 6500K
- Sensor: Sony IMX219 (8 Mpx), 1/4" CMOS
- Interface: USB 2.0 (UVC) — direct use with CNC panel or industrial tablet
- IP68 (fully submersible, coolant-resistant)
Similar solutions from: Uyar Vision (Turkey), Rotoclear (Germany) (rotating lens seal), Kennametal (camera in KM63 toolholder).
4. In-Process Surface Inspection Camera
Line-scan or area-scan CMOS camera inside the machining enclosure scans the machined surface during or immediately after the cut. Detects: scratches, Ra roughness anomalies, geometric defects. Manufacturers: Cognex In-Sight 9000, ISRA VISION SMASH, Keyence CV-X.
5. Endoscopic Inspection Camera
Miniature endoscope camera (3.9–10mm OD) inspecting deep bores, internal channels, grooves, and threads — mounted on the spindle or a robotic arm. OEM module manufacturers: Medigus SCS (Israel), SincereFirst (China), Olympus OEM (Japan). Our modules: from 4mm OD, IP68, 5500K LEDs, autofocus, USB 3.0, 1080p@60fps.
